Chapter Ten
Christopher watched his wife rise from the tub, her flesh rosy pink from the warm water. She might be in her fortieth year, but she still had the body of a much younger woman. Her skin was taut over her frame, and full in the right places. Certainly, the exercise of riding horses daily helped her keep her youthful figure.
Her blonde hair hung down her back, drips of water tracing a path along her spine to the crevice of her deliciously curved bottom. He longed to follow that curve with his tongue, but could only watch in frustration as she dried herself and pulled a comb through her hair. He lifted himself onto the edge of the tub and reached for his crutch, setting it beside him.
His wife tied her bathrobe and handed him a towel, and he hurriedly dried his body. While he wanted to pleasure his wife, his cock didn’t give him the least inkling of hope that he might find a climax this night. He had a very desirable, incredibly sensual naked woman about to be in his bed, and his damned cock couldn’t even be bothered to come to life!
She gave him a soft smile.
“Did you need help?”
God, he didn’t want her sympathy. He’d rather die than have her feel sorry for him.
“No, I—”
He didn’t want to remind her that he was only half of a man. He wanted more than anything to be whole again; even without the leg, he wanted to be the man he was before the amputation. He just wanted to make love to his wife, but his cock, that thing which made a man a man, wouldn’t cooperate.
“I’ll be there in a minute,” he said, pasting what he hoped was a reassuring smile on his face and sending her into the other room.
God, how he wanted her! The way she moved as she walked, swaying with each step, beckoned his bare palms to cradle her close to his… humiliatingly limp cock.
He wondered if Beverly was right. If he stopped taking the laudanum, was it possible that he could regain an erection? The pain of a phantom limb, for which he had been prescribed the laudanum, didn’t occur all the time, not even every day or every week. But when it did flare up it was severely debilitating. The other pain, a muscle cramping that travelled up the back of his thigh, was managed with rubbing the ointment his wife called horse liniment into the muscle.
The second pain could be relatively easily managed; the first caused him to wake up screaming in the night.
But if she was right…
If she was right, and he could at least love her properly — whether he climaxed or not — it would be worth it. He longed to give his wife that child she wanted; though he wasn’t sure that would ever be possible again, he had to at least try. To be a man again, he had to try.
With one hand he held his crutch, and the other held the towel around his waist.
